Prominent Personalities

As the Head of School/CEO, it is my responsibility to cultivate the entire school culture. As the role model for the school, everything I do—statements, philosophy, reactions to important news and events, energy level, and interaction style—has a direct influence on the culture. Collaboration is a powerful tool for involving everyone and aligning them with shared values that steer the decisions and behaviors of all school stakeholders, collectively!

From handpicking the most qualified teachers and involving contributions from our parent community to selecting multi-faceted student support personnel and protecting the welfare and well-being of all individuals in the building, these important duties start with me.

Another prominent member of our Front of House (FOH) team, Parent Relations Executive (PRE) Justin Tyler, is chiefly responsible for parent relations, marketing, communications, and PR. Our parents know him well; he provides school tours to prospective parents and works closely with our parents to address their myriad concerns, feedback, questions, and recommendations to fully resource and answer the diverse family needs of over 800 families.

Another key member of our FOH team, Director of Admissions, Sima Hamadneh, is a very trusted source of support and information as she guides prospective families through the entire enrollment process and works collaboratively with myself, principals, and school leaders to ensure the execution of appropriate student growth strategies.

Ensuring Academic Excellence

We are approaching our ten-year school anniversary, and I have been in the role of Head of School/CEO for seven years. During this time, we have achieved significant milestones, including offering over 60 different After-School Activities (ASAs) at no cost to our families, establishing award-winning athletic programs spanning six sports, obtaining the highest NEASC school accreditation on our initial attempt, and implementing clearly defined policies and procedures that are effectively executed by the School Leadership Team (SLT).

Furthermore, we have shifted our focus to be more parent- and student-centered. Our leadership team has devised a plan to provide greater agency and support for an organized Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), fostered increased collaboration between parent and student groups, introduced monthly spirit days, and engaged students in championing important causes such as Breast Cancer Awareness, Earth Day, Mental Health Awareness Week, and the creation of a Ramadan Community Iftar, among others.

Fostering Academic and Integral Development

To ensure the comprehensive development of our students, we have implemented a multifaceted approach that extends beyond the traditional curriculum. Our commitment to their holistic growth includes project-based learning (PBL) to foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills, while our emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education encourages creativity and innovation. Digital literacy programs equip our students with essential technological skills, and experiential learning opportunities, such as field trips and community service projects, enable them to apply classroom knowledge in practical contexts. Furthermore, character education is interwoven into our curriculum, emphasizing ethics, empathy, and social responsibility.

We also prioritize cultural and global awareness, incorporating diverse perspectives and international studies. Physical education and wellness are integral components of our curriculum, promoting students’ physical health and overall well-being. Additionally, we foster entrepreneurship and innovation, encourage artistic expression, and offer mentorship and counseling services to support students’ social and emotional development.

Steps for Motivation

The school is dedicated to nurturing students’ passion for learning through a multifaceted approach. We believe that an engaging curriculum is paramount, so we craft lessons that are not only academically rigorous but also captivating and relevant to students’ lives. Our educators employ various teaching methods, embracing diversity in learning styles, and harness the power of technology to make lessons interactive and enjoyable. Beyond the classroom, our extensive array of extracurricular activities empowers students to explore their interests and talents, fostering a genuine love for learning outside traditional academics.

Recognizing the uniqueness of each student, we develop personalized learning plans and provide ample recognition for their achievements, instilling a sense of pride and motivation. Our mentorship programs and career counseling further guide students toward their passions and future goals. In addition, we prioritize creating a positive and inclusive learning environment, as we firmly believe that a supportive atmosphere is the bedrock for nurturing a lifelong love for learning.

Financial Assistance

While we do not offer financial assistance in the form of scholarships or need-based aid, we have established valuable community partnerships with over 35 companies in Qatar. Families with parents employed by one of these approved companies are eligible for a 10% tuition discount. Additionally, we provide tuition fee discounts based on the number of students within a family, as part of our Sibling Program. Lastly, our Ambassador Program offers a fantastic opportunity for all our families, providing a 4% tuition discount each time one of our families successfully refers a student who enrolls in our school.

An Inclusive School

Our school’s standout features include its remarkable cultural diversity, fostering one of the most diverse educational communities in Qatar. With over 77 nationalities among students and approximately 15 nationalities among faculty and staff, we capitalize on this diversity to create a unique triangular support system. Parents, teachers, and students collaborate closely to ensure each student reaches their fullest potential, resulting in an ‘Excellent’ Net Promoter Score (NPS) rating – our highest ever.

Additionally, our open-door policy extends to all stakeholders, promoting collaboration and problem-solving. This customer-centric approach has set us apart as a true differentiator in the educational landscape.

Moreover, we emphasize dynamic and supportive relationships between teachers and students. Beyond academics, teachers are available during daily Advisory periods to foster student-to-student relationships, address important issues, and promote holistic development.

Following Emerging Trends in Education

We prioritize ongoing professional development for our faculty and staff. This includes attending workshops, conferences, and training sessions that focus on emerging educational practices and technologies. By investing in our educators’ growth, we ensure that they are well-equipped to implement new approaches in the classroom effectively.

Our educators actively engage in educational research. They regularly read scholarly articles, journals, and books on pedagogy, learning theories, and innovative teaching methods.

Technology plays a pivotal role in modern education, and we are committed to keeping up with digital learning trends. We incorporate technology into our classrooms and curricula, enabling us to adapt to the evolving landscape of education and prepare our students for a tech-driven future.

Educational conferences provide an excellent opportunity to gain insights into the latest trends and innovations in education. We regularly send representatives to such conferences and conventions, where they can network with peers, attend workshops, and learn from experts in the field.

Awards & Achievement

In my seven years as Head of School/CEO at GAAQ, our dedicated community of parents, teachers, students, and staff has achieved remarkable milestones. Among our early accomplishments, we attained the highest accreditation from the oldest American school accrediting organization on our very first attempt, a testament to our commitment to educational excellence. Additionally, we proudly earned certification from the College Board for Advanced Placement (AP) programs, further enriching our academic offerings.

Our Eco-Club’s exceptional efforts culminated in the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag Award, a recognition shared by only three schools in Qatar. Furthermore, our talented art students secured first place and a 40,000 QAR prize in the Zeeenah Initiative World Cup decoration competition, sponsored by Ashghal. In the realm of music, our school band consistently secured top positions, ranking first or second place in the National Battle of the Bands competition.

From an athletic perspective, our under-19 Girls basketball team achieved an undefeated season, a remarkable feat highlighted by their victory over the under-19 Qatar Girls national basketball team. These achievements reflect our collective dedication to excellence in education, arts, athletics, and sustainability, and we look forward to building on this legacy in the years to come.

Future Plans

Every year, we strive to build on our strengths. We eagerly anticipate our upcoming NEASC re-accreditation process to maintain high educational standards. Our athletic department is exploring membership in international leagues, offering our sports teams the chance to compete globally. We’re also heavily invested in our Week Without Walls foundation, expanding experiential learning, establishing sister school exchanges, organizing international service-learning trips, and introducing theme-based activities. Additionally, we’re reviving our Grade 12 Internship Program, allowing senior students to intern for 16 weeks in their chosen fields at companies like Ashghal, Al Udeid Air Base, Woqod, Ritz Carlton, Hamad Medical Center, and Commercial Bank. These initiatives aim to bridge academic skills with real-life experiences outside traditional classrooms, providing valuable opportunities for growth.

Copenhagen International School of Performing Arts

  • Please mention about the school and its mission/vision and various infrastructural facilities.

CISPA offers a performing arts training that is not just an alternative to existing acting courses in Denmark and Europe, but a unique approach to the essence of being an actor. Apart from being highly skilled actors, we envision the performers of the 21st century as entrepreneurs, cultural agents, producers, and not least fully-fledged artists. To realize this vision, we emphasize training both the mind and body as one cohesive, poetic mindbody. Our student body is diverse, hailing from across Europe and select global regions. We prioritize a cross-disciplinary, cross-cultural, and transnational focus in our training, integrating cultural and social entrepreneurship as key components in an international learning environment.

CISPA occupies a unique space in the diverse and vibrant Nørrebro area of Copenhagen, Denmark; a residence equipped with three studios, a dance studio, office space, and a student lounge with a kitchen, offering a comprehensive and dynamic environment for our students.

  • Kindly mention the prominent personality of the school and his/her role in the development of the school.

Lars Henning and Maibritt Saerens are key figures at CISPA, each contributing significantly to its development.

Lars is the main person responsible for shaping the school’s academic and artistic direction, pedagogical approach and praxis, and international collaborations. He trained as an actor at Drama Centre London. His most prominent mentor was the renowned Yat Malmgren, whose innovative Movement Psychology System, developed through his collaboration with the legendary Rudolf Laban, enjoys worldwide recognition. This system amalgamates Laban’s movement theory and practice with Jungian psychology and key elements of Stanislavski’s Method.

Subsequently, Lars has performed in numerous productions nationally and internationally, before starting his directing and teaching career in 2000. Since then, he’s taught and directed around 45 theatre productions in Denmark, England, Scotland, Canada, Egypt, Greece, Romania, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

Maibritt is co-responsible for training content and pedagogical approach. She is an award-winning actress with roles ranging from Shakespeare to contemporary cinema, and she became “national property” as Søs in the big DR TV-series Krøniken (2004-07), a position that hasn’t waned since.

She is a highly experienced teacher in acting technique, including camera technique and mask work. She is an accredited teacher of the Chubbuck Technique and during the last 20 years, she has received master class training from arguably one of the most respected and unique acting teachers in Denmark, Finn Hesselager.

Lars and Maibritt’s combined efforts have profoundly influenced CISPA’s growth and reputation in the performing arts.

  • What new services or activities did you establish at your school?

From the first year, our focus goes beyond offering students the tools and methodology for a successful international acting career. In our opinion the role of a modern performer needs to be redefined into that of an active, artistic collaborator and social/cultural entrepreneur.
Our unique approach to the training emphasizes this through the nurturing of analytical and reflective skills, alongside guidance of our students through independent projects, designed for them to discover their unique artistic voice.

This process concludes in the third year with two key components. Firstly, the culminating Thesis, a hybrid essay paired with a lecture performance, offering a highly personalized format that stems from the student’s research and reflections.

And secondly, the Entrepreneurship Project in which students are tasked with conceptualizing and executing a thirty to forty-minute performance, encompassing artistic vision, philosophical context, and cultural relevance. This project involves collaboration with a team of performers and other collaborators, culminating in a production presented to the public.

  • Please mention what steps are you taking beyond the traditional curriculum to ensure overall development of the students?

CISPA focuses on the overall development of students through holistic training, cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary education, and an open-door culture that encourages exchange between students, teachers, and management, promoting mutual respect, trust, and personal empowerment. Class sizes are kept small (approx. 12 students per year group) to ensure that each student receives a high level of individual attention and guidance.

  • What steps does the school take to motivate and develop the students’ interest towards education?

At CISPA, we’ve adopted a holistic approach to ignite and encourage our students’ passion for learning. From the onset of their training, we treat our actors as both practice researchers and cultural entrepreneurs. This foundational principle is vital in sparking and maintaining their curiosity throughout their educational journey.

Our learning environment is inherently dialectical. We encourage a dynamic interplay of ideas, where students actively participate in dialogues, sharing their insights and experiences. This not only fosters a culture of mutual growth but also extends beyond the confines of traditional classroom interactions, influencing all aspects of their education at CISPA.

Central to our philosophy is the Humboldtian model of higher education “Bildung”, an educational ideal that intertwines philosophy and personal development. We focus on harmonizing the mind and heart, nurturing the actor’s identity and self-awareness, and integrating these within the broader societal fabric.

Embodied knowledge is another cornerstone of our training. We guide students to blend intellectual understanding with their physical and emotional experiences, a practice crucial for authentic and organic performances. In line with the post-critical tradition, we emphasize reflective learning and the practical application of knowledge. This approach hones our students’ critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills.

We believe in the power of personalized learning. Each student is encouraged to develop their unique set of tools and methodologies, facilitating continuous personal and professional growth. This is complemented by regular individual feedback sessions, offering tailored guidance and support.

Beyond academic rigor, we also advocate self-cultivation outside the classroom. Engaging with diverse fields like society, politics, science, literature, and the arts enriches their perspectives and artistic praxis.

We’re committed to providing an engaging, reflective, and comprehensive educational environment. Our aim is not just to educate but to inspire and equip our students for a fulfilling career in the performing arts.

  • How are you providing financial assistance to the students in need?

We are unfortunately not in a position to offer direct financial assistance at the moment, but prices are kept deliberately low to ensure that students from all backgrounds have the possibility to begin their artistic career with us.

  • What makes your school unique?

CISPA’s unique blend of diverse mindbody methodologies, our focus on cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural competencies, personal and artistic autonomy, and our active participation in international collaborative practice research distinguish us in the field of performing arts education. As the sole English-speaking school for performing arts with a full level 6 certification in Copenhagen, our students travel from all over Europe to join CISPA.

Our teachers, as passionate about training the next generation of artists as we are, follow our students’ journey through the entirety of the 3-year training. This journey is further enhanced by select guest teachers and workshops, ensuring a diverse and constantly evolving educational experience for our students.

  • What are some ways you keep up with changes in education trends?

We continually assess and develop our methodologies and tools, actively participating in transnational platforms for collaborative practice research, and hosting international conferences.

  • Please enlighten us about the school’s major awards/achievements, its accomplished/renowned alumni, remarkable collaborations, and major accreditations.

CISPA graduates have established themselves as accomplished professionals both domestically and internationally. Their achievements are diverse and impressive, spanning from starring roles in Netflix productions and in national and regional theater productions. As entrepreneurs many have also successfully secured funding for their own creative endeavors, including theater productions and television shows. This breadth of success showcases the impact of CISPA’s training on their careers.

On an institutional level CISPA collaborates with numerous theatre artists, theatres, universities, and research centers around the world.

  1. Kindly elaborate about the future plans of the school in the same.

We are planning to set up an Alumni Theatre and a One Year Foundation Course in the near future.

In the picturesque countryside of Denmark, nestled amidst serene landscapes and along the tranquil shores of Lake Suså, Herlufsholm School stands as a beacon of educational excellence. Established in 1565, this venerable institution boasts a rich history and a commitment to nurturing young minds. With a heritage spanning over four centuries, Herlufsholm School is renowned not only for its academic prowess but also for the holistic development it provides to its students.

Herlufsholm School: A Historical Overview

Herlufsholm School, often referred to as Herlufsholm Skole in Danish, traces its origins back to the reign of King Frederik II. It was founded in 1565, originally as a seminary by the Danish king. The school was established with the primary goal of providing education to young men, primarily to prepare them for theological studies.

The institution takes its name from Herluf Trolle, a Danish nobleman, and his wife Birgitte Gøye. Their joint efforts and financial support played a pivotal role in the school’s establishment, and their legacy continues to be a source of inspiration for the school’s ethos and values.

Over the years, Herlufsholm School has evolved and expanded its academic offerings. While it retains a strong emphasis on theology and the humanities, it has broadened its curriculum to encompass a wide range of subjects, preparing students for a rapidly changing world.

Prominent Personality

Our Head of School is Gitte Nørgaard. She is the first female Head of School since the founder Birgitte Gøye in the year 1565. Gitte Nørgaard comes from a position as a director at Aarhus Business College and has over 25 years of leadership experience. Gitte Nørgaard began her tenure at Herlufsholm on September 1, 2022.

Beyond Traditional Curriculum

Firstly, The Herlufsholm Distinction (Herlufsholm Udmærkelsen) is a 2-year program that offers challenges to students in high school. It is mandatory for all high school students to participate. The program is individual and reflects the personal development that students will undergo during their time at Herlufsholm. Students learn how to set goals and work persistently and enthusiastically to achieve them.

Furthermore, we offer opportunities for being active outside of class. At Herlufsholm, we believe that a diverse and challenging extracurricular life contributes to each student’s personal and academic development. As such, you can participate in the school’s extracurricular program as an integral part of the school day.

Additionally, the school offers a wide range of facilities and initiatives, such as school tournaments, the use of green areas for recreational activities, a parkour course, a synthetic sports field, and a skate park, and a fitness room. In the local area, students can visit a swimming pool, riding school, golf courses, cinema, library, and more. There are ample opportunities to pursue one’s interests, and Herlufsholm encourages all students to lead an active life.

In addition, we have international collaborations with organizations such as Round Square, and visits to our friendship-school, Sigtuna, in Sweden. Sigtuna is our Swedish friendship school that we have been working with since 2005. We take turns visiting each other, and students from both schools spend the weekend participating in shared sports and musical activities.

Steps for Motivation

We are deeply committed to continually improving, developing the school, our students, and ourselves – both personally and professionally. We focus on seeing each individual student because, with us, everyone should feel comfortable. We support and challenge our students for both academic and personal development through their educational journey, extracurricular activities, and a supportive and tolerant culture.

At Herlufsholm, we nurture a global perspective while maintaining local roots. We contribute to our local community and collaborate on both a national and international level with educational institutions, businesses, and organizations that create unique opportunities for learning and personal growth. Herlufsholm is a commitment to striving for more.

The high academic standards have always been a hallmark of Herlufsholm. The exceptional facilities and dedicated educators are among the factors ensuring that our students’ average performance on their final exams far exceeds the national average. This equips our students with the best foundations for success in higher education.

Financial Assistance

Parents of students have the opportunity to apply for a reduction in school fees. They can apply for sibling discounts and income-based reductions in school fees.

Students over 18 years of age can apply for the Danish government’s educational support program, “Statens Uddannelsesstøtte.”

Thanks to the unique Herlovian community, former students have funded our scholarship program, which began in 2020. The scholarship program provides full financial support for room and board at Herlufsholm for the 3-year Pre-IB/IB or STX programs.

Every year, 5 students from public schools in Denmark are admitted to one of Herlufsholm’s 3-year Pre-IB/IB or STX programs with a fully funded scholarship grant. Each public school in Denmark can nominate one student, and the application must be accompanied by a recommendation from the current school principal, a motivated application, a report card, and documentation of the family’s financial situation.

Campus and Facilities

Herlufsholm is an extraordinary and unique school. The first time you visit Herlufsholm, you will experience a very special atmosphere. The historical spirit, the old buildings, and the beautiful green areas create a unique setting for education and boarding school life. Here, you are embraced by a community that makes the time as a student exciting, fun, and occasionally challenging, and it opens doors for students as they move forward in the future.

Herlufsholm is for young individuals who seek an exciting education in historical surroundings. The school was founded in 1565 and proudly holds the distinction of being Denmark’s oldest boarding school. Consequently, we have many traditions that you won’t find elsewhere, including:

Festive balls, plays, and ceremonies where the school’s founders are at the center.A school uniform that promotes uniformity while allowing for personal expression. The Herlovian language, which is used regularly in everyday life.

Examples of activities include:

  • Sports: Ultimate frisbee, badminton, basketball, crossfit, disco fitness, football, fencing, hockey, rugby, tennis, volleyball, e-sports.
  • Creative: Music, singing, voice lab, visual arts, sculpting.
  • Academic: Language, debate, social media, financial literacy, coding, mathematics, Model United Nations, mindfulness.

Keeping up with Education Trends

Herlufsholm has a long history, and times naturally change. Therefore, we continually modernize traditions if they are no longer relevant. In the 16th century, students slept in dormitories, but we have now abolished the dormitories because students in 2023 experience their daily lives in a completely different way. Today, there are many more stimuli due to digitization and social media, so it’s better for students to have their own rooms and the peace they need to sleep.

In the past, we also needed a small “hospital” on the school grounds, but nowadays, students are often picked up from the boarding school if they are unwell. This means that the need for many hospital beds no longer exists. As a result, we have transformed our “hospital” into a well-being center, where students can still receive care and have a good conversation with our school nurse. Additionally, there is an entire well-being team with trained personnel available for students to consult.

Honors and Accomplishments

  • Since 2009, Astra has awarded Herlufsholm High School with the “Science Talent” designation.
  • The Danish Ministry of Children and Education’s annual national well-being survey for 2022 revealed a favorable trend in high school students’ well-being across the board.
  • As Denmark’s first educational establishment, we released a report on the school’s sustainable development in 2021.

Genki Japanese and Culture School – Educating Students on Language Along with Culture

Introduction

GenkiJACS’ core mission is unwavering: we strive to provide the highest quality Japanese lessons for students from European language backgrounds — to enable them to follow their dreams. We have four schools, located in popular cities across Japan. All are equipped with classrooms, of course, along with helpful facilities like study lounges, coffee stations, and free WiFi. Having these hubs around Japan gives our students a place to feel at home, no matter where they are in the country.

The Trailblazer

GenkiJACS’ founder Rie Kirby studied English in the United Kingdom and taught Japanese to her friends there, before getting her Japanese teaching certification and starting work as a Japanese language teacher in Japan. She worked at several Japanese language schools around Fukuoka City but found that none of them were the perfect fit for the educational needs of the people she had taught in England. As Rie says, “Most Japanese schools focus on how to help students pass university entrance exams, but so many students want to enjoy their studies. Learning Japanese is hard enough by itself, but even harder when the syllabus isn’t made for you.”

So, in 2004, Rie decided to open her own Japanese language school! This was the birth of GenkiJACS.

Rie chose the name “Genki Japanese and Culture School” to represent how truly learning Japanese means not just learning the language, but also the culture – that is, not just what to say, but why to say it. In her own words, “I chose the Japanese word ‘Genki’ to symbolize the energetic attitude and lively nature of our classes.”

She opened the first GenkiJACS branch in early 2005 in Fukuoka City, where she had lived for most of her life.

Language Learning at Genki

Our schools were some of the first in Japan to start teaching short-term conversational Japanese specifically to those who come from European language backgrounds. Limiting our class sizes to eight students maximum allows us to concentrate on individual students and their personal progress. As we go beyond simply teaching Japanese and strive to introduce our students to Japan itself, we offer culture classes that give them a gateway into Japanese culture and broaden their horizons even further. To offer maximum flexibility, our classes start every single Monday of the year, and the minimum course time is just 2 weeks!

Extracurricular Education

At GenkiJACS, learning does not stop at the classroom door. We have an open-door policy towards our students, meaning that whenever they have any questions about the Japanese language, our teachers and staff are ready and waiting to answer them. Our Language Exchange Partner programs allow our students to match with native Japanese speakers and practice speaking the language, while also helping their Japanese counterparts to practice English. We also organize free weekly activities to offer our students even more opportunities to be exposed to Japanese culture.

Steps for Encouraging Students

Our classes are always based on real situations that students may encounter. Beyond that, our teachers never take a lecture-style approach to teaching. Since the maximum number of students in each class is just eight, our teachers actively participate in class discussions and join in on sharing their interests with students to build rapport. We use our students’ experiences, interests, and passions to drive lessons forward.

Financial Assistance

We do not normally provide such support, but each year we choose one student studying in the 1-year or 18-month program to receive a 100,000-yen prize for exemplary attendance, attitude, and progress.

School’s Uniqueness

GenkiJACS boasts a team of teachers with their own international experience and, in most cases, second-language capabilities; four campuses spread around Japan with the option to study at multiple schools; flexible start dates and course lengths; rich cultural exchange opportunities; and service-recognized within the industry, which I will elaborate on below. Our team of dedicated staff has gained us that recognition by helping students with all aspects of their life in Japan and doing everything we can to ensure our students have the best possible stay. For some, it is their only chance to visit Japan, and we make sure to make it count!

Along the Competition’s Side

Our teachers stay on top of shifting trends in the educational field and apply those that fit in with our teaching philosophy. We also go beyond that to follow trends in information technology as well, which keeps us at the cutting edge of education technology. We find this incredibly important in order to become the world-class school we build our reputation to be.

Acknowledgement and Recognition

We are accredited by the International Association of Language Centres or IALC. This is a network of high-quality independent language schools teaching solely in their native languages to international students. We have also been nominated for the ST Star Awards each year since 2009 and have won four times. The Star Awards are very prestigious — we consider them the language school industry equivalent of the Oscars and are very grateful for this recognition!

Future Plans

Our plan is to continue growing and further improving our services to provide excellent Japanese language lessons to more and more people around the world. Right now, we are focused on utilizing up-and-coming IT developments to help us reach even wider audiences. We hope you’ll follow us to see what we do next! Thank you for your time.
