(SMT). Mrs. Kabbara expanded her role to Head the Department of Student Affairs where she assisted the school director in providing school-wide leadership performing administrative, and supervisory duties, and helping students achieve the benefits from designed academic/non-academic programs and services.

She successfully led the school through the National (QNSA) and International (AdvancED) accreditation and played a major role in its planning, and implementation phases. Mrs. Kabbara served on the Advisory Board of the school since 2015.

Prior to joining DeBakey, Mrs. Kabbara began her career in 2001 in the education field in Lebanon. Use Technology in the Classroom

She believe that technology has a positive impact on student learning providing meaningful learning experiences causing them to be more engaged; thus, students often retain more information. SIS teachers use technology as a tool when it is the best resource to be used. All classrooms are equipped with interactive smart boards. Students have the chance to use the smart tablets as well as part of the individual, pair or group work. Technology is a powerful contributor to learning at SIS and is used to deepen students’ engagement

in the meaningful and intellectually authentic curriculum.

Making a Contribution to the Community

Focusing on Qatar, Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions was the first organization she worked for since its inception in 2008. She played a major role in developing the student affairs department in order to create higher education opportunities for graduates.

The school internship program with Calgary, the online AP course through the college board US, the dual credit program with Texas A&M, and the internship with Baylor College of Medicine US are a few of the many programs she put in place for sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

Step One International School

Step One International School at Qatar (SIS at Qatar) is a primary school, offering students Cambridge Primary Curriculum preparing them to be global citizens.

The broad balanced curriculum offered at SIS is predicated on a student-centered approach for developing the whole child.

The developmental pathways are psychological, emotional, academic, technical, and values based. This approach has provided SIS with an educational edge for over 10 years necessary to successfully prepare our students to compete in a global society.

The school is located on Nuaija Street near D Ring Road, and it opened in September 2010. The SIS program serves students in Years 1– 6. Classes have an average student/teacher ratio of 18:1. The regular school day begins at 7:00 AM and ends at 1:00 PM. The school is in the process of applying for the secondary level in an estimation to open a new campus for Year 7-12 students in August 2024.

Overcoming Tough Times

Decreasing the cumulative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on students’ academic achievement remains the biggest challenge they faced on a daily basis. They tracked changes in Math and reading test scores across the first two years of the pandemic using data from the Cambridge CEM InCAS test. They focused on test scores from immediately before the pandemic (fall 2019), following the initial onset (fall 2020), and more than one year into pandemic disruptions (fall 2021).

The level drops were significantly large. Even more concerning, achievement tended to drop more between fall 2020 and 2021 than between fall 2019 and 2020, indicating that disruptions to learning have continued to negatively impact students well past the initial hits following the spring 2020 school closures.

These numbers were alarming and potentially demoralizing, especially given the heroic efforts of students to learn and educators to teach in incredibly trying times. To overcome these challenges, they bet on students’ capacity for resiliency in these circumstances and they projected a timeline for potential recovery over the upcoming years to remediate the gap without overwhelming the students and affecting their mental health. More hands-on courses were introduced, character-building programs were put in place and a lot of positive reinforcement opportunities were created to enable students to gain back what they lost during the pandemic.

Source of Inspiration

Mrs. Kabbara is motivated by the change education can make in the lives of children and its positive impact on their well-being and mental health. She comes to school every day with the intention to give my students the best and most exciting educational and lifelong experiences while at school. The change you see in them and the progress they make is rewarding to a point you cannot explain nor measure.

Her mother was a school director in Lebanon for all her life, she just retired a few years back. Seeing her perseverance, passion toward her profession, and the positive influence she had on all the stakeholders made her aspire to become a leader in the educational field and hopefully make a difference as she did!

Qatar’s Educational Scenario

Being in Qatar for almost 2 decades, she witnessed how Qatar’s education system evolved from small home schools to acclaimed international universities. The country’s focus today is to ensure that its youth are both academically and vocationally equipped to take the lead on the home front and to become major players in the international arena. The government has outlined a clear vision of leveraging its vast resources to diversify the economy away from oil and gas revenues.

Qatar’s National Vision 2030 (QNV 2030) and the National Development Strategy 2011-16 outline the country’s long-term social and economic goals and identify education as a critical vehicle for meeting these targets and have invested in reforming the sector and in developing new education initiatives, programs, and projects over the past two decades. Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser became a leader in the field of education on an international level and persevered to transform the lives of millions of marginalized children and young people across the world through the Education Above All Foundation emphasizing the importance of education for all children across the globe and the right to education to enhance the quality of life.

An Eye on the Future

On a personal level, her goal is to complete a master’s degree in the field of educational leadership in the upcoming two years; On a professional level, she would focus on leading Step One International School, opening another campus, and growing its department of Special Educational Needs “The Bridge Department” to serve more SEN students.

Message for Students

Every student has his specific needs, physical, emotional, or psychological. Students have the ability to adapt and change faster than we think. They just need a role model, patience, and time. To students, she says: You can be whom you want to be, do not be intimidated by the voices suppressing you, hear it, use it to motivate you to push further. No one will live your life, focus on your path, put in the necessary efforts and you shall succeed. To educators, she says: Students need you to be their beacon of light, hold their hands and guide them through the challenges. Give them the time they need, and watch them blossom one after the other.

About Tesoro

“Tesoro” is an Italian word that means “treasure.” Our mission is to provide children (Tesoro) with a valuable education (Tesoro) that is truly a treasure. Located in Tokyo, Japan, we opened our doors in the spring of 2016, and since then, we have been bestowing the gift of Tesoro upon the children in our school.

We create a unique learning environment for children, where they can engage their curiosity while immersed in an English classroom. Our philosophy is to encourage students to become lifelong learners, active citizens, and compassionate individuals, all while utilizing the tools of education that are available to them.

Guiding Light

At Tesoro, every staff member plays a prominent role in the school’s development. Our school’s Director and founder, Mieko Aoki is deeply committed to carrying out the school’s educational mission with passion and dedication. She also teaches Japanese cultural lessons to convey the essence of the Japanese culture to the students.

In addition to Ms. Aoki, we have a talented team of teachers who use their skills and expertise to help shape the school’s development. Daniel is our P.E. teacher who inspires students to be active and healthy, Malavika is our English teacher who focuses on building strong language skills in our students. Niccolo is our Art and Culture teacher who helps students appreciate and create art. John is our Social Studies teacher who instills a love for history and culture in our students. Lastly, Yoshimi is our Special Needs teacher who provides tailored support to students with unique learning needs.

At Tesoro, we have adopted the Reggio Emilia approach, which emphasizes experiential learning and creative expression. To support this approach, we have an Art Master, Gianluca Malgeri, who works with students to create beautiful and meaningful art. Additionally, we use a holistic approach for theme-oriented activities, and we utilize each teacher’s strengths to provide area-focused lessons.

Overall, our team of dedicated staff members, led by Ms. Aoki, plays a crucial role in shaping the development of Tesoro and ensuring that our students receive a well-rounded education.

Fresh and Innovative Approach

We offer both a Day Program and an After School Program. While we are continuously enriching our Day Program, and we are currently expanding our After School Program to provide our alumni with the opportunity to stay immersed in an English-speaking environment and continue to improve their English language skills. During our After School Program, we teach core school subjects such as Math, English, and Physical Education in English.

In addition to our programs, Tesoro is also committed to being a Children’s English Hub in the community. We plan to support various exchange programs and help families with international school enrollment both in Japan and overseas. We believe that by creating opportunities for children to learn and interact with English-speaking communities, we can broaden their perspectives and help them become global citizens.

Beyond the Standard Curriculum

Tesoro utilizes authentic curriculum and resources to ensure the overall development of children. Our two main pillars of teaching resources are the International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC) and Jolly Phonics. We thoroughly deploy the curriculum at each unit and process to ensure that children are learning effectively.

In addition, we follow the Reggio Emilia approach and strive to involve families by keeping them informed and communicating with them about lesson content. We also invite parents into the classroom to share their talents and send activity photos chronologically to keep them informed about their child’s learning dynamics.

Steps for Motivation

We follow the IEYC implementation guide to motivate and develop students’ interest in learning. The IEYC learning process consists of six steps: Entry point, capturing curiosity, Enable the environment, The big picture, Explore & Express.

We organize rich activities based on exciting themes such as All About Me, Blast Off, Dinosaurs, Weather Wonders, and more. We strongly believe that children have a powerful innate ability to learn and we encourage them to explore their curiosity through various means during unit activity time, not just through direct teaching.

School’s Uniqueness

You can experience an overseas classroom environment without the need for an airplane ticket. Simply by entering our classrooms, you can immerse yourself in an English-speaking environment and gain a valuable international education.

Financial Assistance

Our fee scale is among the most reasonable in central Tokyo. Additionally, we offer sibling discounts and participate in a partial tuition fee reimbursement program for working parents through the municipal office.

Awards & Achievements

We are proud to have accomplished our goal of educating children who are able to communicate and learn in English. We have sent many students to international schools throughout Tokyo, and have received positive feedback that they are doing well. In fact, one of our recent graduates received a recognition award for his ‘endlessly kind and positive attitude,’ and we are extremely proud of him.

Following Educational Trends

We stay updated with the latest trends by keeping our eyes open and looking at the bigger picture. We actively search for opportunities to connect with these trends. One such opportunity is our partnership with Elite Education Magazine.

Roadmap for the Future We are committed to providing quality education (Tesoro) to our students (Tesoro). We will continue to offer our best services to ensure that every child receives the best education possible. At SIS, we go beyond the traditional curriculum to ensure the overall development of our students. Our approach is centered around student-centric learning, fostering passionate, independent, and highly motivated learners who can actively contribute to world peace. Here are some of the steps we take to promote holistic development:

1.    Multicultural Environment: We provide a multicultural environment by admitting students from different nationalities and cultures. The school has a policy of having at most 25 percent of one nationality. By embracing diversity, students gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for different cultures, fostering global citizenship and becoming open-minded learners.

2.    Collaborative Learning: We promote student collaboration by organizing mixed-age group activities. Students develop essential skills like collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and communication when working together in teams. This approach prepares them for real-world challenges that require effective teamwork.

3.    Inquiry-Based Learning: Our teachers practice the inquiry model in the classroom, encouraging students to ask questions, conduct research, and reflect on their learning. This approach fosters curiosity, problem-solving skills, and a deeper understanding of the subjects. Students learn to think critically and independently, becoming lifelong learners.

4.    Real-Life Problem Solving: Students inquire into real-life problems, such as sustainability, gender equality, poverty, etc. They explore creative solutions to these issues through discussions and projects, enabling them to become empathetic and socially responsible citizens.

5.    Technology Integration: We leverage technology as a tool to support student learning. Students work with various digital tools and apps that enhance their understanding and engagement. Additionally, we emphasize the ethical use of media and cultivate 21st-century digital skills, preparing students for the challenges and opportunities of the digital age.

By implementing these strategies, we strive to ensure that our students excel academically and develop into well-rounded individuals with the necessary skills, attitudes, and values to thrive in an ever-changing world.

4.     What steps does the school take to motivate and develop the student’s interest towards education?

Our school is committed to motivating and developing students’ interest in education. A few steps we take to achieve this are-

Offering new and different experiences is always a focus of the school as we strive to provide classes and programs that fit our families and their own children’s learning style and interests. From our morning preschool and kindergarten program, to our afternoon programs like Afterschool Kindergarten and Afterschool Elementary, all the way to the extracurricular activities we offer such as our ukulele club and our strategy-based games club, we are always bringing new and unique learning experiences into the view of our students.

We currently have two locations where we hold classes, with our main programs being held at our international school. Here we host 6 classrooms and age groups all the way from 0 years old all the way to elementary 4th grade. In addition to our international school location, we also are proud of our newest section, Joy Studios. This is a multi-functional space that serves as a venue for hip-hop dance classes, music and ukulele class, our games club, cooking classes, a music studio, and more.

Mission Statement

Joy to the World’s main mission since our founding in 1999 is to provide all children with a safe space to grow and learn through creativity. We believe that through our wealth of experience, both in the area of childcare and education, we have built a relationship of trust with the surrounding community. Joy to the World also places a high priority on finding talented and experienced educators and caretakers who bring their positivity and passion into the classroom and fill our students with a sense of possibilities and realizing their own potential.

The Torchbearer of the school

Our prominent personality at the school is our school’s founder, Jerry Hanus. Starting with one room in 1999, through his positivity and passion, Joy to the World has grown to be of service to thousands of families over the years. Jerry’s main strength comes from his diverse personality and interests. In addition to being an experienced and dedicated educator, Jerry is also an author, entrepreneur, song writer, musician, cooking instructor, and photographer.

Jerry enjoys bringing his interests into the classroom and motivating students to pursue their own passions. In addition to being enthusiastic about the classroom, Jerry is very enthusiastic about bringing his own culture to Japan. Jerry is originally from Hawaii, and whenever possible, Joy to the World holds a yearly Hawaii Program which gives students who are vacationing in Hawaii the chance to participate in a memorable learning experience which couples the impact of an English immersion environment with magic that is Hawaiian culture.

Overall, Jerry remains the life force of our school and continues to propel Joy to the World into the future by working hard towards the goal of creating a fun and safe place for all children to learn through creativity.

Services Offered

The services we offer as part of our school are diverse as we meet the diverse group of students who we are proud to teach. Recently, we have started a partnership with our associate school, Mo-T-Vate, to offer classes to returnee students. Kikokushijo Japan provides a venue for more advanced English-speaking students who are elementary age to explore academic concepts through fun experiments, group discussions, focused lessons, and class projects. Mo-T-Vate also offers classes for adults who are interested in bettering their English skills as well!
In addition to Mo-T-Vate, our parent company is also happy to announce the re-opening of our daycare section. Aoyama International Daycare and Learning Center is a great chance for parents seeking daycare to enjoy the same experience and positive spirit as Joy to the World, but in a more relaxed daycare-like environment. Like our international school, this program is also an English immersion environment!

Besides these programs, Joy to the World is constantly expanding the range of options for our families to choose from, so look on our webpage if you would like to know what kinds of opportunities are waiting for your family!

Beyond Traditional Daycare

At Joy to the World we hire teachers. Teaching is a highly specialized field. Within this field, childcare is a particularly important focus. We take this responsibility seriously and are constantly searching for ways to improve the quality of our education and the training our teachers receive to be familiar with the most up-to-date issues regarding early childhood development and education.

Although we separate students into classes based on their age, each group of students is composed of individuals. Individuals who have their own passions, potential and personalities. We take the time to alter and design our overall curriculum to be flexible in meeting the diverse learning styles of our students. Parents often comment that they feel like our school is like a family, because we make personal connections with each child and use that personal connection to foster a feeling of safety and freedom.

Steps for Student Motivation and Growth

Early childhood education is so important because it is connected to cognitive and emotional growth. For many students, their journey at Joy to the World begins when they are between 1.5 to 2 years old. With this in mind, we approach education in keeping with the hierarchy of needs. First, children need to know that they are safe, which we do by providing a predictable, calm and positive environment. Singing, dancing and play are all ways we open up children’s trust by providing a fun array of shared activities. After children feel safe, their next need to be met is to feel loved and a sense of belonging. Through reassurement, positive touch, and a stress-free learning environment, children begin to realize that they will be accepted no matter what.

After establishing a loving environment, we begin to encourage esteem by celebrating differences and accomplishments. Outlets for creativity are given as frequently as possible to give children a chance to explore who they are and what they like. We hold that the definition of creativity is knowing that it is not only okay to make mistakes, but that it is all a welcome step on the journey. By the time students graduate from Joy to the World, they will fulfill the last step on their journey which is exploring who they are and how they feel about the world. This is essentially the theory of critical thinking, whereby we all receive and interpret the world through our own experiences. Helping students to this point is a crucial step as they begin to become involved with deciding things for themselves and forming the building blocks for the rest of their lives.

School’s Exclusivity

Joy to the World is unique in the way that we develop relationships with our families. The bond between school and home is an important one, and through our shared responsibility to help these children develop, grow and learn, we form strong connections between our staff and each child’s family. Through this mentality, we have built up an atmosphere and a culture at our school that is well known and regarded amongst our school community.

Following Educational Trends

At Joy to the World, we believe that our responsibility to the children is not only in tracking their progress, but in making progress as professionals to be constantly improving. Professional development is a cornerstone of our school, and we accomplish this in three ways. We hold weekly staff meetings to discuss classes and individual learners.

We highlight areas of concern and take responsibility as a team to understand the problem, research the underlying theory, and make a plan of action. Secondly, we hold training for our teachers throughout the year that can include foundational educational theory, new trends and theories, as well as best practices for kindergartens around the world. The final source of professional development we hold as an important tool in staying up-to-date is our involvement in the Tokyo Association of International Preschools (TAIP). Through TAIP, of which Joy to the World is a founding member, we have access to multiple seminars and training opportunities throughout the year.

Future Plans

As we look towards the future, Joy to the World will continue to strive towards our founding goal, which is to expand our reach, and our philosophy, to impact the lives of as many children as possible. We believe strongly in the culture of positivity and inclusivity that we have achieved after more than 20 years of serving our school community. This atmosphere of trust and belonging is what motivates us to continually search for new and better ways to help our students be more successful. Through our dedicated and talented staff, the support of our families, and the love and happiness we create for students, we look forward to the future everyday. Children are our bright shining tomorrow, and we feel honored to work with these amazing young learners on their journey.

The Most Inspiring Education Leaders of 2022 (China)

Julia Woo – Committed to Providing a Holistic and Progressive Education to Students

Education is critical foundation for success in life because it helps individuals develop the skills and knowledge they need to pursue their dreams. However, education does not occur solely in the classroom; it is also shaped by leaders who guide our school communities.

When it comes to educational leadership, the role of women is more important than ever before. One such educational leader is Ms. Julia Woo, Invictus Secondary School of Hong Kong’s Principal and Head of School.

Background

Ms. Julia Woo’s passion for helping people drove her to pursue a degree in Social Work, and this has equipped her with the skills needed to go the extra mile in helping her students succeed when she became a teacher in the Singapore education system. From being a teacher, she worked her way up to Principal. As a Principal of two schools, she substantially achieved value-added academic outcomes as well as pioneered new innovations. She then joined Singapore’s Ministry of Education as a Cluster Superintendent overseeing multiple schools.

Mission

“Overall, our mission is very simple,” says Woo, “it is to prepare students for today’s ‘VUCA’ world, which is characterised by volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. That means giving them not only the knowledge they need, but also soft skills and social and emotional competencies.”

This approach reflects Woo’s unshakeable belief in the importance of nurturing well-rounded students with the personal qualities and self-confidence to make the right choices. This ethos informs her decisions as she guides Invictus School, founded in 2019, through the post-pandemic era. The school will focus on creating new opportunities for students in sports, volunteering, collaborative group projects, team competitions and international exchanges.

Fostering Discipline in Students

During her time as a Principal in Singapore, she worked with students who came from disadvantaged backgrounds. To promote discipline in students, she would first help these students discover a sense of security by providing them with a safe educational space. To quote Ms. Woo, “When there is no discipline in the classroom, there is no productivity. The only way to reverse this is to make students feel like they’ve being valued and cared for. This increases their self-worth and motivates them to succeed.”

About Invictus School Hong Kong

Invictus School Hong Kong is part of the Invictus umbrella of schools founded in Singapore in 2015. Invictus was founded with the mission of providing high quality, affordable education from Kindergarten through Year 13 (ages 5-18). Invictus School Hong Kong utilises rigorous and globally renowned curricula and provides students with immersive classroom learning experiences led by dedicated and skilled educators who aim to instil in each student a desire for lifelong learning and excellence.

The Curriculum

“We aim to lay a very strong foundation, and that starts in the kindergarten and primary years,” says Woo, noting that Invictus offers a ‘through-train’ system which takes children all the way up to Year 13 in secondary school. She adds, “We follow a spiral curriculum which progressively adds breadth and depth and is also in line with the school’s objective of providing a quality, affordable education which sets high standards and lets students explore their potential.”

Learning and Growing Beyond the Classroom

“I have already seen that our students have a great deal of potential; they are very teachable and open to learning, and they have talents and strengths that we can tap,” she says. “But, one key area where I think we can do more is in developing leadership and communication skills. We can make our students more confident in themselves and more forthcoming. We want to encourage them to take leadership of their own learning and pursue things they are passionate about.”

As Hong Kong’s pandemic restrictions have ended, Woo feels a sense of urgency about organising a wide range of extracurricular activities (ECAs). She views the concept of teaching and learning beyond the classroom, helping students to discover new interests and uncover hidden talents, as an essential element in holistic education where learning takes many forms and connects classroom learning to real-world issues and experiences.

Since January, students have had the opportunity to become involved in extracurriculars such as Football, Coding, Chess, and Art. Using students’ interests as a guide, the school plans to add options such as music, fencing and student journalism in the near future.

The school also plans to conduct regular student exchanges. These will include immersion programmes and sports competitions with other Invictus schools in Singapore, mainland China, Thailand, Malaysia and Cambodia, as a means of helping students learn about other cultures, make new friends and think more globally.

“I’m very passionate about nurturing students to be future-ready and grounded in good value.” Woo says. “Also, I value parents, who are our partners in education. As such, it is very important to build a good relationship with parents who entrust their children to us and want to see them succeed. We listen to feedback received from parents because it is a great source of ideas and information on ways for us to keep improving.”

Technology in Classroom

NAISHK’s virtual school experience endeavours to harness the best educational technology to ensure our students’ learning is of the highest quality. We use a range of technology including Artificial Intelligence (AI) software to help teachers make judgements on what learning students have understood. The beauty of technology is that it can help us to deliver a more personalised and engaging experience for each child.

The software can also provide valuable tools for teachers in a physical classroom to enhance their teaching experience. For instance, analytics available through digital tools can help teachers keep track of students’ engagement levels during lessons. Using readily available software such as ‘Teams’, teachers can receive reports on how often students contribute to class discussions, which can be challenging to track in a traditional classroom. This information can help teachers quickly identify students who may be struggling and offer personalised support. Scheduling small group chats or one-on-one sessions can also be done virtually, allowing for more focused and individualised instruction that can aid learning.

In a physical classroom setting, technology can enable collaborative work among students and teachers, which is crucial for students’ overall development and communication skills. Utilizing software such as padlet and Flipgrid can allow students to post their work, create content together, and provide feedback to each other. By integrating technology into the classroom, teachers can create a more interactive and engaging learning environment that helps students build skills that will serve them well throughout their lives.
