  • Please mention about the school and its mission/vision and various infrastructural facilities.

Alnoor International Schools (AIS) was established in early 2007. Dato Prof. Dr. Mahmoud and his friend, the late Dr. Yassin Yahya Yassin, set out to construct a school that would provide inexpensive, university-level English instruction to the children of Arab expat families in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Captain Ibrahim Muhamady and Dr. Abdulsaheb Saleh Abdulsaheb soon joined. With Datin Amani Majid Altaha’s support as soon-to-be principal, the premises was prepared for students to join.

Alnoor International School was inaugurated in July 2007 with a curriculum that combines Western-style education (IGCSE) with community-centred Arabic values in order to cultivate a global perspective in the younger generation. In 2007, 70 students of 12 different nationalities began their education at Alnoor International Schools (AIS). Alnoor International Schools (AIS) emphasises the importance of understanding and accepting the different cultures represented in the school along with developing individuals as responsible, reflective, caring, and confident members of our society with the aim to develop emotional, spiritual, moral, and cultural values that will lead students to being disciplined, hardworking, and wise. Lastly, provide a learning environment where students take responsibility for their own learning. High achievement and creativity will enable all students to contribute to the global community.

  • Kindly mention the prominent personality of the school and his/her role in the development of the school.

Alnoor International Schools was established by four founders, each of whom brought a vision and mission from his own educational heritage.  Dato’ Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Khalid Al Msafir, Chairman and CEO of United Renaissance Sdn. Bhd. (UR) and Design for Scientific Renaissance Sdn. Bhd. (DSR), is the former president of Lusail University in Qatar. Dr. Captain Ibrahim Al Muhamadi, Captain/Senior Pilot (MAS Airline). Dr. Abdul Sahib Salih Assistant Prof. Of Economics. Late Dr Yassin Yahya Yassin Professional Civil Engineer. From the outset of the project, the founders emphasised both high-quality educational standards and modern teaching methods, all within an environment that promotes intercultural understanding.

Datin Amani Majid Altaha Alnoor, the school’s founding principal and current board governor, played a crucial role in laying the groundwork for the institution, fostering a welcoming atmosphere for AIS students, and keeping the focus on education so that they would graduate ready to contribute to society.

  • What new services or activities did you establish at your school?

In 2015, smartboards were introduced into the classrooms, transforming the campuses’ traditional textbook learning environment into a multimedia institution. During 2020–2022, when the world was transitioning to COVID-19, AIS swiftly implemented hybrid learning, which combines physical and digital instruction using a digital platform known as the Zoom app. In 2022, the infamous Joga Bonito and Dos Santos arenas, a state-of-the-art futsal pitch, began operations on the grounds of Alnoor International Schools, demonstrating the school’s international and inventive character once again. As football is a sport that brings people together globally in a tranquil manner, AIS endeavours to incorporate sports into the learning experience.

  • Please mention what steps are you taking beyond the traditional curriculum to ensure overall development of the students?

AIS-KL aspires to establish a high-quality institution that combines a traditional textbook-based learning environment with multimedia and cutting-edge facilities. Also, creating a welcoming, unrestricted environment where students can learn in a relaxed setting The AIS has created a mini-zoo for educational and recreational purposes. Establishing an online management system permits immediate communication between teacher and student, as well as between teacher and guardian.

  • What steps does the school take to motivate and develop the students’ interest towards education?

At AIS-KL, students are strongly encouraged to participate in campus activities. When children are interested in their studies, they have a positive outlook on school, contribute meaningfully to classroom discussions, and are well-prepared to perform at their best. Encourage students to take an active role in their education, which can have a positive impact on their academic performance, in order to promote a more positive school climate. Appreciate their accomplishments and hard work in person, online, or via social media. This will allow students to both emphasise their positive qualities and overcome any deficiencies.

  • How are you providing financial assistance to the students in need?

Students are eligible to receive financial support from AIS in the form of monthly payment instillments as well as scholarships.

  • What makes your school unique?

AIS’s welcoming environment is one of the factors that distinguishes it from other educational institutions. From the very beginning, the founders of AIS intended to create an institution that combined both traditional and modern teaching and learning methodologies, along with incorporating new modern technologies into its educational system. All this enables students to develop and thrive as tomorrow’s leaders. Being raised in an enjoyable and relaxed environment will help them grow physically, mentally, and intellectually with knowledgeable minds. Therefore, this institution ensures the implementation of new teaching methods and the creation of harmonious classrooms, and appointing good teachers will help shape students’ confidence for a modernised society.

  • What are some ways you keep up with changes in education trends?

Keep up-to-date by reading educational publications, websites, teaching and learning books, educational platforms, and other teachers’ blogs. It is also one of the most cost-effective ways to remain current on educational developments.

  • Please enlighten us about the school’s major awards/achievements, its accomplished/renowned alumni, remarkable collaborations, and major accreditations.

AIS has witnessed a number of achievements throughout its 15 years journey.  In 2010, AIS attained a memorable milestone when the school was recognised as an official Cambridge Assessment Centre. From then on, anyone seeking to obtain an international education certificate could turn to AIS to take an official IGCSE examination and prove their attainment of the Level 9 Checkpoint. In 2013, an AIS student was awarded by Cambridge for scoring a 100 % mark in Arabic as a foreign language this put the mark for AIS.  In 2014, AIS established a Cambridge Assessment Centre for Primary, enabling anyone to verify accomplishment of the Level 6 Checkpoint. In 2016, AIS acquired its own transportation fleet, consisting of three school buses and seven school vans. From then on, kids and parents could depend on a reliable and safe transportation service. In 2019, the student population numbered 46 different countries among the two campuses in Jalan Bellamy. In 2020, during the lockdown, AIS introduced online learning using a digital platform known as the Zoom app along with WhatsApp as a discussion platform to communicate among students and parents. In 2023, AIS introduced two new programmes: Robotics and Money Tree. These two programmers will help students develop their ability to design and might one day create a state-of-the art robot. As for the money tree, this programme will help the students in the future manage their finances in a more manageable manner.

10. Kindly elaborate about the future plans of the school.

The latest developments in the educational landscape are staggering. Young people need to find an appropriate balance between working hard and doing the right thing. AIS-KL and other schools like it have a responsibility to provide students with opportunities to unwind and enjoy themselves as they acquire the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the contemporary world. Because of the beneficial effect on productivity, students will need fewer study hours in the future and more outdoor activities. AIS’s future plan is to welcome more nationalities, create a well-balanced educational environment, and engage students in real-life activities that help them learn how to manage real-life situations.

School is of utmost importance for several reasons. First and foremost, it provides a structured and formal environment for learning. Students acquire knowledge and skills in subjects like mathematics, science, language, the arts, and social studies, which form the basis for their intellectual growth. School instills a love for learning, curiosity, and critical thinking abilities that are vital for personal development.

School also serves as a hub for socialization and the development of essential social skills. Children interact with their peers, learn to collaborate, communicate effectively, and navigate relationships. They also engage in extracurricular activities, sports, and clubs, which foster teamwork, leadership, and creativity. These experiences enhance students’ overall well-being and help them become well-rounded individuals. One such school working for the overall growth of their kids is Thames British School, Spain.

About Thames British School

Our school was built in 2014 and began its first academic year in September of that year. We started with Early Year and Primary School and gradually increased our offer to Sixth Form Classes (Year 13).

Our mission is to provide British Education of the highest quality in a stimulating, safe and positive learning environment, with high expectations of achievement and behaviour.

We have created an environment where children can build the knowledge and skills they will need in the 21st century by encouraging them to critically evaluate their experiences within the globally respected curricula of the National Curriculum for England and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Our broad and balanced learning experiences are designed to encourage children to take risks and embrace challenges.

Our international community of ambitious, highly qualified teachers fosters a friendly, culturally diverse atmosphere within modern, spacious classrooms. Our multicultural family atmosphere celebrates diversity for the freedom it gives us to learn from each other.

All classrooms are modern, bright and spacious, each containing an interactive whiteboard and fully resourced for each year group. From Pre-Nursery to Year 4, all classrooms are fitted with private bathrooms. Our students also benefit from our first-rate outdoor sports facilities, such as a basketball court, football field with artificial grass, ballet room and four outdoor play areas for Early Years and Primary school.

Prominent Personality

Our school director is an inherent part of our family – of the teachers, the students, and the parents. A Family School

With 280 students, and fantastic parent-teacher-student relationships, we have a strong family feel. We are all on the same page and work as a team; a united community with a common purpose.

Our school employs highly qualified teaching staff who regularly take professional development courses to keep up to date with the latest developments in education and safeguarding.

Most of our lessons are taught in English, meaning children learn not only to speak English fluently but also to think in English, which is an invaluable asset in today’s global marketplace.

Our top priorities are to provide our students with a happy and safe environment, and to help them develop and grow every day during their academic life. At Thames, we have created a safe, stable, and nurturing environment for students, fostering an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust.

Activities for Students

We offer a wide range of enrichment activities for Secondary School and after-school extracurricular activities for early years and primary students. Our school also boasts a cinema room and a unique library with a rooftop lounge attached. They create a truly novel space for our students to enjoy, whether for study or simply to relax.

We are extending our international environment with partnerships and exchange programmes across Europe. In the meantime, we hope to continue providing the highest quality education to all our students who decide to join us and become part of our Thames family. About the school – Diverse & Inclusive Environment

Laude San Pedro International College is an inclusive school with a programme focused on academic excellence, teaching the British National Curriculum – from age 3 to 18 – and, from age 12, offering the possibility of studying the Spanish ESO and Bachillerato curricula (with up to 65% of classes in English). We have a strong focus on academic standards – our GCSE and A Level results, as well as the Spanish Selectividad, are well above national averages in both countries. It is a highly international environment with students of over 50 nationalities enjoying a unique learning environment designed to meet their needs.

Andy’s quote: “I think one of the aspects is we’re one of the few schools that has an international section and teaches the Spanish national curriculum. We’re an international school of great diversity, but having the Spanish system roots us in Spain because our ESO & Bachillerato staff remind us that we’re in Andalusia and in Spain. And I think having the two systems together is unique and forces us to think nationally as well as internationally.”

A vision from a new principal

Since September 2022, Laude San Pedro International College has a new Principal, Andrew Atkinson. He has been involved in international education for over thirty years. Born and raised in England, his international experience has taken him all over the world.

Andy (as everybody knows him) has graduated with a BA in Humanities from Exeter University and went on to teach Geography and Theatre in secondary schools. He studied his Masters at Trinity College, Dublin, achieving a distinction in his M.Ed. in Leadership and Management. He is known for his passionate beliefs in international education and has experience with many international programmes of all ages from 3 to 18 years. His last formal headship was as Director of the International School of London and he has also been a Governor of the International School of Dublin, the first ever IB primary school in Ireland. In the last three years, however, Andy carried out international consultancy work leading a variety of projects in Spain, Russia and most recently a highly innovative international school start-up in Punta del Este, Uruguay.

Andy’s quote “The first thing a Principal should do in his first year is see how the school runs for an entire year. So I’ve been very conscious and I spent a lot of my first time running focus groups, listening and finding out what people are already doing. I’ve been teaching for over 30 years and leading schools for maybe nearly 20 years now and there is a danger that you keep repeating the things you’ve done before, there’s so much out there in terms of research and ideas, etcetera. To understand trends in education, we need to go deeper. So to do that, I want all my teachers to feel passionate about keeping up to date. We started something called Research Wednesdays, where we stay after school on a Wednesday, voluntarily, the school buys cake and coffee, and every week for 1 hour, we discuss an article or some of the latest research.”

Safe Happy Learning

“What I most like about Laude is our school community. Friendly staff is one of the most dominant things at Laude. Our children are physically safe from a safeguarding perspective and well looked after for their well being. We really encourage students to be vocal and speak their mind, which also leads to a sort of personal safety of mind. We’re just beginning some work on something called global life competencies. They’re the sort of broader cross subject skills that children learn how to do, like the ability to think critically or the ability to communicate effectively or the ability to self manage and self organise yourself.

ISP School

We are part of the global education group ISP (‘International Schools Partnerships’) one of the largest education groups in the world. As a global group of schools, our students benefit from being part of a wider international community which offers many additional learning and cultural opportunities.

Andy’s quote “Being part of ISP, a group of over 70 schools, means that there are always great opportunities for staff such as online courses provided to our teachers and staff to register for. We also get great opportunities for students and we are excited about 30 of our kids playing chess online with over 60 schools around the globe.”

Amazing Campus

Our excellent facilities include a football pitch, two multi-sports courts and a gymnasium with changing rooms for over 400 people. We also have four computer rooms, a multimedia lab, a graphic design room, innovative science labs, dedicated rooms for drama, food technology labs and a new radio studio, as well as the latest technological devices (iPads, Chromebooks and interactive whiteboards). We have a large dining hall with its own kitchen where school meals are prepared and an extensive library to encourage our pupils to develop an interest in reading and research.

Innovative learning & International Mindset

We offer a unique and incredible educational experience to each one of our students, which we call “Amazing Learning”: having the ability to improve day by day, and be amazed at everything learned, whatever the starting point was. We work so that the student feels happy and motivated in an environment that generates confidence.

Andy’s quote  “So there are five key areas that they’re working strategically on to make us the school of choice. One of those that we’re doing super well is English as an additional language and multilingualism. We’ve got an amazing language programme; we do French, German and Chinese, not just in the Secondary school, but also in Primary School from Year 2 upwards. Even the students who are in the Spanish national system of ESO and Bachillerato are all bilingual and they have an amazing level of English by the time they leave.”

Getting better is what drives us

“At a personal level, I’ve tried to model to my staff by running some student led projects. it’s about students not expecting things to be done for them. Do you want to do something? Get on and organise it. How do you want to organise it? Do it. We’ve got areas where students are leading at the moment, like quiz night, a dog show, school radio station and much more.”

Sports, Arts, Drama & Beyond

“What delights me about our school is certain things like our sports department that is full of enthusiasm for different types of sports, for getting involved in tournaments and making sure he has a genuine belief with his team to make our kids physically fit. And the other area that I’m working on in a little way is our arts group, because we have a great visual arts teacher, we have an amazing dance-drama teacher, we have a new music teacher who’s got great potential to take music forward. A lot of people just think it’s a department in a school, but it’s actually a way of life and learning across the whole school. If you have sports, music, art, drama and dance, it brings joy to a school that radiates every bit of a school. Our recent Key Stage 2 talent show absolutely showcased that. And I’m a strong believer that children don’t just learn art or sports, they learn through these experiences about other things.

Barcelona High School – Revolutionary Approach to Education

About Barcelona High School

Barcelona High School (BHS) lives by the promise and mission to help teenagers excel academically, socially, and psychologically. The school relates to students as whole humans and prides itself on a dynamic learning environment.

The school’s innovative open plan fosters meaningful connections across the whole school. Unlike traditional schools, friendships are not limited by individual grade levels, genders, or cliques.

This revolutionary educational pedagogy is referred to as the BHS Method™.

Prominent Personalities

Amanda Slefo, Partner and Director, helped to turn the vision of the school into a reality. Throughout the growth of the school, she has been a powerful inspiration and guide for students and staff. Her role initially involved overseeing educational learning, academic performance, and university placement as she later became a Partner of BHS.

Amanda now wears many hats and remains an important figure to students, parents, and the extended community of the school. She is the matriarch of the BHS family and models a strong life force for the school. Amanda always keeps her door open to ensure each student feels valued by creating meaningful relationships with them.

BHS is the brainchild of Akida Mashaka, an American entrepreneur from Los Angeles, California. Akida created BHS as he recognized certain problems with schools in Barcelona when looking for a school for his son. Akida saw the antiquated methods in education and recognized the pressing need to renew the school system.

Akida is a graduate of Harvard Law School and attended university in the USA on a tennis scholarship. On top of that, he graduated #1 in Psychology in his university class. Akida’s unique blend of passions and empathic mentality led to his creative concept for this revolutionary school approach.

Beyond the Traditional Curriculum

Instead of stuffing information into students, BHS guides students to the possibilities around them. By asking questions, teachers encourage students to challenge their held beliefs and consider other points of view. Students are given choices in class. For example, if they are interested in video games, an assignment can be adapted so they create a game character, for example.

The curriculum isn’t set in stone. Our world is constantly changing, and BHS acknowledges that the program of study should be malleable. The school wants to foster adaptable students that will be able to handle their journeys after they graduate. Life doesn’t have a single answer like a math problem, so BHS teaches students to create their own solutions.

Cultivate Students’ Interest in Learning

BHS makes the curriculum relevant to students’ situations. Teachers want students to understand how they can apply the knowledge that they are learning at school outside the classroom. Traditional education often preaches abstract topics without giving them context. This leaves students feeling unmotivated, with strands of information that are meaningless and empty. On the contrary, BHS adds dimension to the learning process. Instead of spitting out facts, teachers encourage collaboration, practical application, and dynamic discussions in class.

For students at BHS, school is exciting and fun, and learning opportunities arise throughout the day. Teachers are always around to answer any questions, from explaining what a tesseract is to pondering the meaning of life. Above all, learning is a collaborative process, where students get a voice in the direction they want their education to take.

Due to smaller class sizes, teachers get to know students so they can feel supported and understood. Teachers ensure students feel seen and that everyone’s voice gets a chance to be heard. BHS teaches critical thinking, giving the students a chance to develop their opinion and share it with the class.

Home for Students

BHS has a radical approach to education. Above all, the school stands out on account of its family-type environment.

A student once compared the space to a home. Building on this analogy, the main body of the school is like a big, open living room. Students feel safe and learning is done collectively, in community. By taking away the walls, BHS fosters relationships that domino across cultures and ages, allowing for an incredible blend of ideas.

Surrounding the living room, the space is embraced by individual classrooms. Smaller-scale learning takes place here, focusing on specific subject areas. These spaces can be compared to the individual rooms of the house, each with their own personality.

This home is a special place where students are constantly being challenged and supported on their educational journey.

BHS believes in equitable access to education. To enact this ideology, the school has granted several scholarships to students in difficult financial situations.

Changes in Education Trends

Work is combined with play as BHS strives to create life-long learners by instilling curiosity around knowledge. Traditional school models students as machines and knowledge is spoon-fed to students in a single direction. BHS creates students who flourish by encouraging a multi-directional education, where their inputs are welcomed. Learning is layered and teachers model skills and then allow students to apply these skills.

BHS teachers adapt the curriculum in an engaging way. The school rejects the ‘sage on the stage’ model of the past and embraces the model of teachers as inspiring leaders and guides. In turn, teachers are open for their own teachings to be challenged and students get to mold their education to fit their needs.

Guidance and Nurturing Relationships

The school has a mental health counselor which makes students feel at home and reinforces a sense of community. Additionally, BHS offers college counseling and guides students to their future aspirations.

At BHS, students are involved in their learning journey. Student body representatives actively obtain student’s feedback and communicate suggestions to the staff. Through this method, activities such as ‘Movie Night’ and ‘Ski Week’ have been possible.

BHS cultivates the growth of well-rounded students so education is extended far beyond the classroom. Clubs are offered after school. These include the board game club, the beach volleyball club, the music production club, and the art club. These clubs serve as the groundwork to foster deeper connections, motivated by shared interests. Some of these clubs are proposed and organized by the students themselves as students at BHS are leaders and self-advocates.

Achievements and Global Leader

BHS is ranked as the best American school in Barcelona for secondary and high school education, as well as the best international school in Barcelona. This is due to its innovative and radical learning philosophy.

Additionally, through university counseling and guidance, students can achieve their future educational goals at top international universities.

BHS is the most international school in Barcelona as over 80% of the student body is from outside of Spain. Accordingly, BHS has been featured in the ‘Barcelona Metropolitan Magazine’, as well as ‘The Knowledge Review’ as the “International American School for the Global Village.”

Future Plans of the School

BHS has undergone incredible growth. Three years ago, in 2021, the school started with only 5 students in a small underground space. The next year, it grew into an office space, with over 30 students. In its third year, BHS has an enrollment of over 100 students in an open dynamic learning environment. BHS expects over 100% growth in the 2023-2024 school year.

The entire school, from stakeholders to teachers to students to parents, are excited to see the massive change that has been possible in such a short time. In turn, BHS is expected to keep growing, and the potential for this education model is unbounded. The goal is to refine this radical education model and inspiring new schools around the world with the same mission and philosophy. By creating an alternative education system, the old methods will dwindle and this grassroots movement will rise to take their place.

Prominent Personality

Named after the patron saint of the diocese, St. Michael’s International School was founded on a firm foundation of Christian principles, which continue to this day. It is part of an international educational tradition extending back to 1893 when its predecessor, the English Mission School (EMS), one of Japan’s first international schools, was founded.

Arising from the joint efforts of Miss Leonora Lea, an English Missionary who remained in Kobe during World War II, and Bishop Michael Yashiro of  the Kobe diocese, the school officially opened for international school children on 10th March 1946 with a special event which was attended by Sir Vere Redman, who represented the British Embassy and travelled from Tokyo for the occasion. The school is many things to many people and over the years St. Michael’s has welcomed students from every corner of the globe. It is a common occurrence to have family members visiting the school to reminisce about their time, remembering old friends and events.

Beyond the Classroom

At St. Michael’s children are supported to learn and develop at their own unique pace using the International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC.)  This research-based curriculum recognises global best practice and the developmental needs of 2–5-year-olds. The IEYC supports key learning through holistic enquiry and play-based approaches encompassing all curriculum areas including personal, social and emotional development.  This innovative curriculum is underpinned by eight learning principles:

1. The earliest years of life are important in their own right.

2. Children should be supported to learn and develop at their own unique pace.

3. Play is an essential aspect of all children’s learning and development

4. Learning happens when developmentally-appropriate teacher-scaffolded and child-initiated experiences harness children’s natural curiosity in an enabling environment

5. Independent and interdependent learning experiences create a context for personal Development and are the foundation of international mindedness

6. Knowledge and skills development lead to an increasing sense of understanding when children are provided with opportunities to explore and express their ideas in multiple ways

7. Ongoing assessment, in the form of evaluation and reflection, is effective when it involves a learning-link with the home

8. Learning should be motivating, engaging and fun, opening up a world of wonder for children where personal interests can flourish

Financial Assistance

With a focus on compassion and funded primarily by donations from our alumni, the school has a well-established scholarship fund, created in honour of our Founder, Miss Lea.  In the event of sudden, severe financial hardship due to immediate loss of income/bankruptcy or other unforeseen circumstances, St. Michael’s International School can provide short term financial support for existing families.
