Sister Merceditas O. Ang – Education is the Best Investment in Life

Introduction

The road less travelled might not be an easy choice but nevertheless most fulfilling in life and work. My professional training in law and education certainly enriched my vocation as a religious sister. Servant leadership has prominently set the moral compass of my apostolic endeavours across disciplines. I have developed the passion to serve and help others since my college days. In the process of doing lifegiving advocacies, it is meaningful to empower people to unravel and develop their full potentials and become the best version of themselves.

I believe that leadership is an opportunity to serve. Leading by serving is mission-driven and imbued with spirituality and ethics. Servant leadership has an empowering and transformative effect on people and society. What makes life most meaningful is when we see the big picture that is aligned with our purpose and eternal goal.

Use of Technology

As a Paulinian educator, I advocate a holistic and technology-enabled teaching and learning model. The digital transformation of the university is a work in progress. Utilizing advanced educational technologies in the classroom certainly engage the students towards better learning outcomes. Hybrid and hyflex learning modalities are used for classroom instruction. We have established simulation laboratories and invested on artificial intelligence and robotics. Coding education is integrated in the learning design. Consequently, the students are able to create and invent automated and sustainable projects, digitized programs and applications, IA fabrications, and value-added scientific innovations. What is important is to empower the students to harness new technologies in creating solutions to real life problems.

Transformational Leadership

Relevance and innovation can enhance the quality of education beyond borders. In 2015, we launched the internationalization program at St. Paul University Philippines (SPUP) with the tagline, “making a difference globally.” This was a very significant transformation in the learning environment and organizational culture of the university. Accordingly, the student population became diverse, inclusive, intercultural, and interfaith. There was remarkable increase in the number of students and partners in the academe and industry. Likewise, we embarked on transnational education, research collaboration, faculty industry immersion, and student mobility.

About SPUP

SPUP was founded on May 10, 1907 by the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan Valley, Philippines. From its humble beginnings, it developed into an autonomous international university with accredited programs and modern facilities. Additionally, for its integrated undertakings toward environmental stewardship and care for creation, the university was conferred the award of Most Environment-Friendly and Sustainable School.

Propelled by its commitment to provide quality education, SPUP was granted an ISO 9001 Certification by TUV Rheinland in 2000 and accredited by the Asian Association of Schools of Business International since 2014. It was selected as one of only 16 Universities in the Philippines by World Bank as a Knowledge for Development Center (KDC). For its exemplary achievement as an innovative private school, SPUP was a Netizen’s Choice Awardee in the 2021 Philippine Social Media Awards in recognition of its strong online presence, positive ratings and reviews, and responsible use of social media platforms as its marketing tools.

The post-pandemic world poses overwhelming challenges. Apparently, the educational ecosystem is undergoing massive changes and digital revolution. SPUP remains steadfast in its mission and commitment to provide high quality education. It integrates 21st century learning competencies and global education towards the future-ready and holistic formation of the students. My deep faith and determination motivate me to translate challenges into opportunities. I think without a box and transcend obstacles with empathy and agility. When confronted with issues and problems, I always verify facts and data then focus on viable solutions. What keeps me going is loving service to God and others. I am sustained by prayers, hard work, discipline, and balanced perspectives in life.

I am inspired by the noble legacies and edifying achievements of great teachers. As the incumbent President of SPUP, I take the lead in the breakthrough innovations and expansion of the university. School leadership entails strategic thinking, agile disposition, prudential judgment, conviction and character to engage in reforms, paradigm shift, transition, and recovery effort.

SPUP wants to blaze new trails of creativity, innovation, and sustainability post-pandemic and beyond. Its strategic directions are vision-mission driven and anchored on the positive convergence of Quality, Technology, and Sustainability. Thus, transform into a smart university in a green campus, providing world-ranked quality of education and truly making a difference globally.

As a Founder Director, Prof. Sahay set up a world-class, state-of-the-art campus and a “research-based business school” at IIM Bodh Gaya. In February 2018, Vinita S. Sahay assumed leadership of the newly-established Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bodh Gaya, where the campus grounds were predominantly covered with mature trees and shrubs. Initially, the institute encountered challenges, including the absence of senior administrative staff and permanent faculty. Moreover, a dispute arose with occupants of two hostels owned by Magadh University, who were hesitant to vacate the premises despite the official transfer of land to the institute. However, since then, remarkable transformations have unfolded within the institute.

Notably, the old campus building has been refurbished to accommodate administrative offices and classrooms that align with the modern requirements of an academic institution. Additionally, the permanent campus showcases an impressive academic structure, a well-equipped sports complex, student hostels, and faculty housing, all of which draw inspiration from the Vihara concept of Nalanda. The achievement of these developments was made possible through the valuable assistance of the local administration and even the required intervention from the police.

And bringing diversity to the campus was a challenge. Starting with fewer than 40 students per batch in their regular full-time MBA program, IIM Bodh Gaya now welcomes nearly 650 students for the 2023-25 session, with approximately 35% of the student population being female.

The cohesive team at the institute has initiated numerous well-thought-out projects, with a primary focus on ensuring the success of new courses. Attracting a talented pool was also a significant challenge for the institute, but the unwavering focus has been given to procuring a permanent faculty, resulting in a roster of 50 permanent faculty members, with an additional 18 faculty members scheduled to join in the near future.

  • Being in the industry for a long time, enlighten us with the educational scenario of your country and the ever-changing education sector.

In recent times, education has seen a significant revolution. Classrooms have been replaced by a virtual facilitator (it might be your PC, laptop, or even your tablet). After independence, the changing scenario of education and literacy has caused a rapid rise in the number of students. The government of India is putting a lot of effort to improve the education scenario in India. The literacy rate in India was 18.3% in 1950-51, and it jumped to74.04% in 2010-11. It is a significant achievement of the government to see a massive jump in literacy. The government is trying to improve the education system so that the people’s standard of living could also be enhanced as well as other goals like eradication of poverty, unemployment, and social equality could be achieved.

  • Who has most influenced you to become an educator/administrator, and how did they influence you?

My Mentor Dr Daisaku Ikeda says, Education must inspire the faith that each of us has both the power and the responsibility to effect positive change on a global scale. Education should not be based on or limited by a nationalist agenda. Education must cultivate the wisdom to reject and resist violence in all its forms. And this influenced me the most o become an Educator.

He emphasizes that effective teaching must be based on the understanding that every child is unique, and that children’s talents, paths, and purposes are many and diverse.

  • What are your professional goals for the next 5-10 years?

My vision & mission is to opening children’s eyes to the wonder of the world around them and to their role as guardians of their environment. As an Academician I am using my skills for the sake of the improvement of society as well as to make each person understand that their happiness lies in their own hands. As a leader, I believe in fostering every child, every human being in a free and unconstrained atmosphere. It is important to make sure that they feel relaxed and don’t overdo it. We want to cultivate them to be self-motivated and independent. Let us try not to raise them into perfect bonsai trees, but rather strong towering that grow freely in nature, deeply rooted in the earth and reaching for the sky. The task of education must be to stimulate and unleash the wisdom that lies dormant in the lives of all young people.

  • What message would you like to portray the student across universally?

My message to youth is that I believe in Try, Try, Try until you Succeed! Without a doubt each person has an innate talent. The question is: How do you discover that talent? The only way is to exert yourself in whatever is before you. Your true potential will emerge when you give everything you’ve got to your studies, sports, extracurricular activities, entrepreneurship or whatever you are engaged in. The important thing is that you get into the habit of challenging yourself to the limit and never give up.

Nurul Nisa Omar – Expanding Boundaries for Success

  • Kindly brief us in short about you and your journey since the beginning of your career.

I started out in the creative industry venturing into advertising, publishing, and public relations before I decided to join the academia. When I was pursuing my PhD, I was teaching part-time at a private university and my first class was Public Speaking. Once I see the changes in my students at the end of the semester; going from not being able to complete a sentence at the beginning to being able to stand in front of the public and perform a speech, I feel I will always be an academic and contribute to students’ growth and learning. Now, I am leading a faculty, partnership programs, technology adaptation, global affiliation, and many more. It has been an amazing journey; from a single class of public speaking to all that I have done today.

  • How do you use technology in the classroom?

Firstly, technology is embedded in my teaching and learning processes and not necessarily only in the classroom. Students were to be expected to run through activities, notes, chatroom, or any other form of online learning prior to coming to the physical class. In the physical class, we will focus more on the practical approach. Without familiarizing themselves with self-paced learning via technology that is absolutely critical, it will be difficult to produce a technology-savvy community.

  • What has been one of your greatest contributions to the institution you have worked in for their development?

One of my greatest contributions would be organizing a global academic conference it generated 3,128 live session viewership with participants across 27 different countries and over 30 notable speakers in both industry and academia. I was working with the best team members and it will be one of the unforgettable experiences at the institution.

  • Please tell us about your organization in brief.

Owned by 2 prestigious universities, the International University of Malaya-Wales (IUMW) was established based on a mutual partnership between the University of Malaya (UM) & the University of Wales, UK in 2013. Since then, the University has experienced tremendous growth and remains committed to developing students who are ready to contribute to the next industrial revolution.

  • How have you dealt with challenges, and what are some ways you have resolved them?

My method is not to fear any obstacles and welcome the challenges with open arms while keeping an open mind about the whole scenario or situation.

  • What motivates you?

I have always been an achiever and I will not settle for anything less than the best results. I feel that motivation always starts within yourself, and there is nothing specific that I can pinpoint. Of course, at the back of my head, I would like my children to be proud of their mother and hopefully be able to be a positive role model in their lives. But even at a young age before I was a mother, my motivation always comes from the competitive spirit that I have within myself.

  • Being in the industry for a long time, enlighten us with the educational scenario of your country and the ever-changing education sector.

Malaysia is a wonderful country to live in and a lot of effort has taken place to ensure the youth will be able to receive access to education. A lot of assistance, benefits, grants, scholarships, and many other opportunities are available for Malaysian youth. The pedagogy however I feel can be improved. The speed towards the advancement of teaching pedagogy especially at the school level should progress further than what it is now. Nevertheless, it is still a learning curve and I believe improvement will take place.

  • Who has most influenced you to become an educator/administrator, and how did they influence you?

Not any specific person, but similar to what I mentioned above, the satisfaction during my first teaching experience; teaching students public speaking – is the starting point for me to decide to excel in the academic line.

  • What are your professional goals for the next 5-10 years?

To keep loving what I do – regardless of the position, location, or profession.

  1. What message would you like to portray to the student universally?

Do not let what you cannot do, stop you from doing what you can do!
